Understanding Cryotherapy and Its Benefits
Cryotherapy is gaining popularity for its many health benefits and is one of our new services being offered at our Wellness Center in Monroe, Georgia. In this blog post, we’ll explore what cryotherapy is, how it works, and why it’s becoming an increasingly popular choice for those seeking holistic well-being.
What is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a therapeutic technique that involves exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures for short periods and has been used worldwide since the 1970s. The process occurs in a cryotherapy chamber, where individuals are surrounded by sub-zero temperatures at approximately -124 for three minutes or to an individual’s tolerance.
How Does Cryotherapy Work?
The science behind cryotherapy is rooted in the body’s natural response to extreme cold. When exposed to sub-zero temperatures, the body activates physiological responses to conserve heat and protect vital organs. Blood vessels constrict, redirecting blood flow to the core and triggering the release of endorphins – the body’s natural mood elevators.
Additionally, the sudden cold exposure prompts the body to enter a state of heightened alertness, increasing circulation and oxygenating tissues. Once the cryotherapy session concludes, the body begins to warm up, causing the blood vessels to dilate and bringing nutrient-rich blood back to peripheral tissues. This process is believed to have a range of health benefits, including, but not limited to, pain reduction, improved circulation, and muscle recovery acceleration.
What to Expect at Cryotherapy
Preparation is key when entering the cryotherapy chamber. Upon arrival, our knowledgeable staff will explain how the cryotherapy chamber works and what to expect during a session. Staff will go over any contraindications to cryotherapy prior to your session. They will review what to wear during the session, help you with our blue tooth headphones, set a timer for you, and they will be close by during the entirety of your session. We provide a body towel wrap, hat, gloves, socks, and Crocs. You can also wear your own clothes during your session. It’s important to note that all metal, including jewelry and clothing with metal elements, must be removed.
Sessions are 3 minutes long or to your tolerance. You can exit the chamber at any time. This short duration is designed to optimize the therapeutic benefits of cryotherapy. As for frequency, how often you indulge in cryotherapy depends on your needs. For those seeking therapeutic benefits, we recommend sessions 2-3 times a week. We offer a monthly package for those who want to experience cryotherapy multiple times a week.

Is Cryotherapy Right for You?
While cryotherapy offers many potential benefits, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating it into your wellness routine. Not everyone should undergo cryotherapy. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as cardiovascular issues, cold intolerance, or circulatory problems, should avoid or consult with a healthcare provider before attempting cryotherapy.
