Holter Monitor

A Portable Diagnostic Tool for Heart Health

Our Family Health provides Holter monitor tests for our patients to help diagnose heart problems that may not be evident during a short, in-office test. These portable medical devices are non-invasive and easy to manage. They provide us with invaluable data to be able to understand how our patients’ hearts are behaving as they go about their normal days.

We typically recommend these devices for our patients they are experiencing symptoms of an irregular heartbeat, such as dizziness, fainting, palpitations, or shortness of breath. It can help to identify a possible arrhythmia, how often it occurs, and how long it lasts. Holter monitoring can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for heart rhythm problems, such as medication or a pacemaker. Holter monitoring can also provide information about a person’s heart rate.

What is a Holter Monitor Test?

A Holter monitor is a wearable device that takes continuous EKG readings while it is being worn, Generally the monitoring period is one to two days long. The monitor looks for arrhythmia, skipped beats, abnormal heart rate, or things that may not occur during the time you have an EKG during the office. Holter monitors can detect many heart issues, but are most commonly used to detect cardiac arrhythmias.

How does a Holter monitor work?

Like an EKG, electrodes are attached to your chest to pick up the electrical rhythm of the heart. The data is stored in the device and when the test is complete a cardiologist reads the recording to assure normal heart rate and rhythm.
