What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are fluid injected into the skin. There are several types of fillers that use different compounds to achieve the same goal of plumping the skin to give it a healthier, more youthful appearance. Fillers are used to minimize the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles or to plump an area and address sagging areas of the skin that may be occurring as part of the natural aging process. Additionally, fillers can be used in such a way that they reshape the face by augmenting cheekbones or restore volume in the midface area.

The visible effect of most fillers diminishes over time as the body absorbs the solution. Because they are made of natural compounds, they are safe to use and can be updated as needed.

Who Can Benefit From Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers can be beneficial for anyone that wants to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, or hollow spots. Dermal fillers are particularly useful in treating the cheeks, jawline, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and the chin.

Be sure to discuss any allergies you may have with your provider in advance of the service, particularly if you have ever had an adverse reaction to hyaluronic acid, lidocaine, or adrenaline. If you have Oral herpes, please discuss premedication with your medical provider prior to booking an appointment. We recommend preventative medication (Valacyclovir, Acyclovir) the day of the procedure and three days post procedure. You will also need to inform your provider that you have a history of oral herpes prior to receiving filler.

What to Expect: Dermal Fillers

Before the service: Your consultation starts with a discussion of the areas that you would like to have fillers used in and a determination of how much volume of fillers will be required. This will determine the final cost for your service as well as whether multiple appointments will be required.

During the service: Topical numbing cream will be applied to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Taking ibuprofen or aspirin before or after the procedure may increase bruising. We recommend Tylenol for pain relief.

After the service: You can expect some swelling and discomfort following the procedure. We recommend oral and topical arnica to reduce bruising.

This may take a few days to fully resolve but is generally significantly better within 24 hours. Your team member will also go over the full after-care process with you before you leave Our Family Health Wellness Center

Frequently Asked Questions Dermal Fillers

What are fillers?

There are many types of fillers used to enhance the appearance of individuals by minimizing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. Fillers are fluids injected under the skin that can both provide volume themselves, and stimulate the body to increase collagen production, improving the overall appearance of the skin.

At Our Family Health, we use Juvéderm exclusively. This hyaluronic acid filler is a sterile pyrogen-free physiological solution of cross-linked hyaluronic acid which is not of animal origin. There is no necessity for skin testing prior to receiving Juvéderm treatment.

How long do fillers last?

Juvederm has been shown to provide correction to the injected sites for up to 6 to 12 months; however, the correction does not last as long when used for lip augmentation.

How long do under-eye fillers last?

The specifics of how long fillers last depends on a variety of factors. In general, under eye fillers may last somewhat less than other areas. But results should be consistent for more than 6 months.

Do fillers ruin your face?

Dermal fillers are safe, effective, and will not ruin your face. It is important to keep in mind that dermal fillers are not permanent and will need to be administered periodically in order to maintain your appearance. Additionally, be sure to work with a skilled professional to ensure that you receive the natural results and that the injections are positioned and administered correctly.

Does getting dermal fillers hurt?

Dermal filler injections will be somewhat uncomfortable but should not cause significant pain. Additionally, this pain can be mitigated through the use of a topical numbing cream. Taking ibuprofen or aspirin before or after the procedure may increase bruising. We recommend Tylenol for pain relief and oral and topical arnica to reduce bruising.

How long does swelling from fillers last?

Swelling from dermal fillers can last a few days, but after the first 24 hours you should notice significant improvement. Icing the treatment area can help in reducing the swelling.
