Aesthetic Problems & Answers: Solutions for Common Concerns

Our Family Health is dedicated to helping you look and feel your best. Our nurse practitioner specializing in aesthetics, Kathy Hatmaker, FNP-BC, joined us to discuss common aesthetic concerns and the solutions available in our latest podcast episode. If you’ve ever wondered how to address those under-eye bags or the fine lines around your mouth, this blog post will answer your questions.

Understanding and Addressing Dark, Puffy Eyes

Dark, puffy eyes are a common concern. Surprisingly, a simple over-the-counter remedy like Preparation H, typically used for hemorrhoids, can help. This product works because it contains ingredients that constrict blood vessels, reducing inflammation and discoloration under the eyes. For an added boost, try refrigerating Preparation H before applying it. The cold temperature can enhance its effectiveness by further reducing puffiness.

Other cold treatments, like chilled cucumber slices or refrigerated eye gels, can be beneficial. However, these methods provide temporary relief. Consider treatments like carboxytherapy (carbon dioxide therapy) or microneedling for a more lasting solution. These treatments stimulate collagen production, reducing inflammation and improving the skin’s appearance. In some cases, a touch of Botox can also help with fine lines under the eyes. All of these aesthetic treatments are offered at our wellness center.

Tackling Crow’s Feet and Frown Lines

Crow’s feet, the fine lines that appear around the outer corners of the eyes, are another frequent complaint. The go-to solution for these is Botox. Botox works by relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles, resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance. The effects typically start to show within three days and peak around 14 days post-treatment. Regular Botox treatments every 12 weeks can significantly reduce the visibility of crow’s feet and frown lines, often called “11 lines” due to their appearance between the eyebrows.

Solutions for Marionette Lines and Lip Enhancement

Marionette lines, the deep lines that run from the corners of the mouth down to the chin, and fine lines around the lips often require a combination of treatments. Botox can help relax the muscles, reducing the depth of these lines. For more pronounced results, dermal fillers can add volume and smooth out the skin.

When it comes to lip enhancement, fillers are the preferred choice. They provide volume and shape, creating fuller, more youthful lips. A Botox lip flip can complement fillers by enhancing the upper lip’s natural curve, providing a subtle pucker.

Addressing Neck Aging and Acne Scarring

The neck often reveals our age, even if our face looks youthful. Botox can relax the platysmal bands, which contribute to sagging. For texture and tightness issues, microneedling, carboxytherapy, and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments can stimulate collagen production, improving the skin’s elasticity and appearance.

Acne and acne scarring can also be significant concerns. Active acne should be treated with appropriate topical or oral medications to prevent bacteria from spreading. For post-acne scarring, microneedling combined with PRP is highly effective. These treatments stimulate skin regeneration, significantly reducing the appearance of scars.

Preventive Care and Maintenance

Preventive care is crucial. Starting a good skincare routine early, using medical-grade products like Obagi Medical, which we carry in the wellness center, and staying hydrated can make a big difference. Regular facials, medical-grade facials, and early treatments like Botox and hyaluronic acid injections can help maintain youthful skin and prevent severe issues later on.
